Labour’s employment plans worry businesses

Senior Labour MPs are engaging with City leaders to address concerns over proposed employment reforms aimed at enhancing work-life balance. Angela Rayner and Jonathan Reynolds met with executives from major companies, including Sainsbury’s and BT, to discuss the “right to switch off” and flexible working arrangements. Legal experts express apprehension about the proposed “fair work agency,” which could act as both judge and jury, potentially undermining traditional legal processes. Joe Beeston from Forsters warns that businesses will face significant challenges in adapting to these changes, including increased claims for unfair dismissal from day one of employment. He notes: “I expect a rise in grievances and claims from disgruntled employees.” The reforms aim to support workers but may impose heavy burdens on businesses, necessitating careful consideration of their implementation.
