Cameron Hancel, a former firefighter, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for taking and sharing inappropriate photos of a deceased car crash victim. Mr Hancel, who was dispatched to the scene of the fatal accident, sent WhatsApp messages to friends, referring to the deceased as a “fat corpse” and making jokes about struggling to move the body. Prosecutor Robert Price said Mr Hancel’s actions “caused serious harm” and denied the victim’s family the dignity they deserved. Despite claiming his actions were a coping mechanism due to pressures of the job, Mr Hancel admitted to misconduct in a public office.
