Solicitors can skip university degrees

Law Society president Richard Atkinson has announced that aspiring solicitors may not need a university degree to qualify under the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination. This marks a significant shift from previous views, where the Association of Law Teachers insisted that a degree was essential. Mr Atkinson expressed confidence in this change, saying: “Do they need a degree? No. Do they need educating to degree level? Yes.” This development could ease the financial burden on many prospective solicitors, who face costs of around £65,000 for a degree and legal practice course.
