Police diversity jobs surge by 30%

The number of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) roles in UK police forces has risen by nearly 30% over the past three years, reaching just under 200 positions. Since the 2021/22 financial year, nearly £15m has been allocated to these roles, with West Yorkshire and Merseyside Police being the largest spenders. The overall spending on EDI roles increased from £3.6m in 2021/22 to £6.2m in 2023/24, marking a 70% rise. Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, has condemned this expenditure as an “outrageous abuse of taxpayers’ cash,” arguing it fails to address crime effectively. Earlier this year, Kemi Badenoch, then Business Secretary and Equalities Minister, commissioned a report which indicated that much of the spending on EDI is unnecessary.
