Judge rules on medical titles

Mrs Justice Lambert has ruled that it is lawful to use titles that may mislead the public regarding medical professionals. The British Medical Association (BMA) challenged the General Medical Council (GMC) over its decision to classify “physician associates” and “anaesthesia associates” alongside qualified doctors. The BMA argued this could confuse patients about qualifications, but the GMC maintained that patients could easily distinguish between doctors and associates. Justice Lambert noted: “The public would be best served by applying the same high professional standards to associates.” Following the judgment, the BMA expressed disappointment, claiming it would perpetuate patient safety issues and mislead the public about qualifications.
