Police chiefs have publicly rebuked ministers over proposed cuts to prison sentences, warning of a potential 6% rise in crime. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) anticipates thousands more offences as the Sentencing Bill aims to reduce prison overcrowding by releasing offenders earlier. Assistant Chief Constable Jason Devonport stated: “In the short term, there will be an increase of offending in the community.” The NPCC estimates the reforms could cost policing between £300m and £400m, labelling it an “unfunded consequence.” The Probation Service is also seeking to recruit 1,500 officers annually to manage the expected demand.
