Fury erupts over Mahmood’s asylum plans

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s new asylum policy has ignited backlash from Labour MPs. Reports indicate that children born in the UK to refugee parents may face deportation if their parents’ refugee status is revoked. A Home Office source stated this move aims to prevent “perverse incentives” for refugees to have children in the UK. Lord Dubs accused Mahmood of using children as a weapon against refugees. The Home Office plans to announce changes regarding settled status applications for these children soon. Mahmood’s reforms also include stricter conditions for refugee status and family reunification. Meanwhile, Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, has criticised Mahmood’s plans for safe routes for asylum claimants, arguing that there is not enough social housing to take in thousands of asylum seekers when “there are already thousands of illegal migrants in asylum hotels”. Finally, the Telegraph reports that first-tier immigration tribunals will be required to publish their judgments on whether foreign criminals and rejected asylum seekers should be allowed to remain in Britain.
