Nigel Farage calls for new restrictions on voting

Reform UK would revise Britain’s voting rules to prevent non-citizens voting if the party wins power, its leader Nigel Farage has said. After Reform lost to the Greens in the Gorton and Denton by-election widespread family voting was reported by Democracy Volunteers, a group of election monitors. This is where some voters had entered polling booths with their relatives and coercion is believed to be widespread. Farage said he would end “Commonwealth voting” which allows Commonwealth citizens, including those from Pakistan, to vote in UK elections if they can prove they legally reside at a property within a constituency. Meanwhile, Democracy Volunteers warned MPs last year that illegal family voting was undermining the legitimacy of postal votes. The Electoral Commission said it is reviewing the claims made following the Gorton and Denton by-election.
