Passengers fight back over fare evasion claims

Train passengers are preparing to take legal action against major train companies, alleging wrongful convictions for fare evasion. Lawyer Brian Higgs from HNK Solicitors described the situation as a “miscarriage of justice,” drawing parallels to the Post Office scandal. He said that most individuals prosecuted for fare evasion “haven’t done anything wrong.” Seven train companies – Northern, TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast, Greater Anglia, Great Western Railway, Arriva Rail North, and Merseyrail – have already retracted up to 75,000 wrongful prosecutions. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has acknowledged the need to combat deliberate fare-dodging but insisted that innocent individuals should not fear legal repercussions for genuine mistakes.
