The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, is exploring reforms to the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme (VDPS) following concerns about inadequate support for individuals harmed by Covid vaccines. In a letter to Kate Scott, whose husband suffered permanent brain damage after receiving the AstraZeneca jab, Mr Streeting said he has “commissioned officials to work up a number of options” for potential legislative changes. Families have expressed frustration over the scheme’s high threshold for compensation, which currently requires a 60% disability rating for a one-off payment of £120,000. Mr Streeting acknowledged the complexity of the issue, stating: “I want to ensure that any proposals the Government brings forward are robust.” The Government is considering a bespoke scheme for those with life-altering conditions due to vaccine reactions, similar to the Infected Blood scandal compensation scheme.
