The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation into the influence of Apple and Google’s mobile platforms on consumers and businesses. The CMA aims to assess whether these tech giants should be classified as having “strategic market status” under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC). Sarah Cardell, the CMA’s chief executive, said that “more competitive mobile ecosystems could foster new innovations and new opportunities.” The investigation is set to conclude by October 22. The CMA has already opened a separate inquiry into Google’s search and advertising practices.
