HMRC is to launch a new tax whistleblowing system to encourage people to come forward with information on tax dodgers. Tax minister James Murray said improved incentives will be offered to those willing to expose complex fraud, bringing payouts form the tax office into line with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the US. More will also be done to tackle phoenixism – where individuals or groups deliberately wind up a company to avoid paying taxes or debts. This accounted for approximately £500m of HMRC’s tax debt losses in 2022/23.
