Mitie has been awarded a £415m contract to transport prisoners in Scotland, replacing GEOAmey. This decision follows a series of security failures by GEOAmey, which included missed hospital appointments for inmates. However, Mitie faces scrutiny due to past controversies, including a Home Office investigation into alleged racist messages among its staff. Scottish Tory justice spokesman Liam Kerr expressed concerns about public safety, stating: “Given the eye-watering amount of money on the line, taxpayers will expect the contractor to securely transport criminals.” The contract begins on January 27, 2024, and will last until April 2035.
