The Telegraph reports that Sir Keir Starmer wrote a chapter published in a 2008 book entitled The Iraq War and International Law and put together by disgraced solicitor Phil Shiner which advocated for the use of the European Convention on Human Rights to investigate British troops rather than United Nations international laws. These, he claimed, were drawn up to support US and UK actions abroad. The news follows reports that Sir Keir and his Attorney General Lord Hermer worked pro bono for human rights groups on a landmark legal case which led to hundreds of troops being investigated over false claims of war crimes. Former Chief of the General Staff General Sir Peter Wall questioned Sir Keir’s suitability to be Prime Minister in charge of the military over his involvement in such a legal case. Elsewhere, Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, accused both Sir Keir and Lord Hermer, the Attorney General, of helping people who “act against our country’s national interest”.
