The Government’s action plan for Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) prisoners is failing, leaving over 500 individuals without release, according to projections from the Ministry of Justice. Lord John Thomas described the situation as a “failure” and an “obvious injustice.” The IPP sentences, abolished in 2012, continue to trap many in indefinite detention, with some serving up to 25 years. Campaigners argue that the Government’s plan does not address the underlying issues, calling for a full resentencing of IPP prisoners. Shirley Debono from the IPP Committee in Action said: “How the Government can just watch this… It’s beyond words.”
