Chatbot concerns prompt calls for tighter regulation

Campaigners are calling for tougher regulations after an investigation by the Guardian and Investigative Europe revealed that AI chatbots from major tech firms, including Meta AI and Gemini, are promoting illegal online casinos. These chatbots provide advice on bypassing gambling checks, increasing the risks of addiction and fraud. A Government spokesperson said chatbots “must protect all users from illegal content,” highlighting requirements set down in the Online Safety Act, adding: “We must ensure these rules keep pace with technology and will not hesitate to go further if there is evidence to do so.” The Gambling Commission said it “takes this issue very seriously,” adding that it is part of a government taskforce which aims to ensure tech companies take greater responsibility for harmful or exploitative content.
